#TirgearrTuesday

Q: What is your ideal Valentine's Day date?

A: A floor picnic on a rainy day.

***

Drew and the girls met Sera at Faye’s Cafe and ordered one picnic hamper to go.

“Welcome to our humble abode.” Drew opened the door for Sera. “Madison, grab a quilt from the linen closet.”

The girls made short work of their sandwiches, but Drew became suspicious when they turned down dessert—their favorite part of any meal—and disappeared into their bedroom.

He shared a conspiratory look with Sera. “I think we have two matchmakers at work.”

“You mean you didn’t put them up to it?”

“No.” His face turned bright red. “Uh—”

“You look adorable when you blush.” She stroked the side of his face. “Today’s been a lot of fun.

“But?”

Sera frowned. “But I gotta go.”

“Right now?” Drew leaned toward her, capturing her lips in a gentle kiss. When he pulled away, Sera had a slightly dazed look on her face.

“Maybe I can stay a little longer.” She licked her lips as she swayed toward him.

“Yeah?” With a knowing smile, Drew caressed the side of her face. “I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times. And, I swear, it’s not a line. You’re beautiful.”

Sera gazed back at him, the same wonder he felt mirrored in her eyes. “People throw around words, like, all the time, and they’re completely meaningless. You tell me I’m beautiful, and I can believe it’s true.”

“I’ve never met anyone like you.”

Sera arched an eyebrow. “You mean, famous?”

“No.” Drew shook his head slightly. “Without pretense. High school is just a bunch of posturing kids, pretending to be someone else.” He shrugged. “Even me. And, you— You could be the biggest fake of them all, and you’re not. You’re real.”

“Stop, Drew. You’ll make me blush.”

“Yeah?” He leaned in, grazing the edge of her ear with his teeth. “I can make you blush.”

She shivered in response to his insinuation, shying out of his reach. “I’m sure you can.”

Origin Stories: Vampires

Who was the first vampire?

Lilith, according to medieval Jewish folklore, was Adam’s first wife before Eve. When Adam insisted she play a subservient role, Lilith grew wings, flew away from Eden, and has roamed the Earth for 4,000 years. “Lilith” is derived from a Sumerian word for female demon. A winged demon known for preying on pregnant woman and infants, she has been portrayed as the first vampire.

A Hebrew legend casts Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Christ, as the first vampire. In the book of Matthew, Judas, one of Christ’s apostles, betrayed Jesus for payment of thirty pieces of silver. After Jesus’ crucifixion, Judas tried to return the silver to appease his guilt. When his return was refused, Judas hung himself. The book of Agulah, written 843 years later by a Catholic monk named Aed in Aramaic, contains details of the punishment God inflicted on Judas. According to this source, God cursed Judas with immortality, the inability to walk in the sun, and the insatiable craving for human blood. The curse was also extended to Judas’ offspring.

In the Middle Ages, superstitions about vampires were used to explain plagues and other unfamiliar illnesses, in particular, a blood disorder called porphyria. Symptoms of porphyria included sensitivity to sunlight which caused severe skin blisters or burns, receded gums which looked like fangs, and aversion to garlic due to its sulfur content. Some symptoms could be temporarily relieved by ingesting animal blood.

Vlad Dracula, known as Vlad the Impaler, ruler in Walachia, Romania, off and on from 1456-1462, is thought to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. According to legend, Vlad killed his enemies by impaling them on wooden stakes and dipped his bread in their blood.

Vampires in The Magicals Series

Creation and Maker Relationship

A vampire “parent” is called a maker. A vampire “child” is referred to as offspring. The offspring have an obligation or loyalty toward their maker, but makers can release their offspring. When you are turned (created) into a vampire, your soul floats away, and human blood becomes your only source of food.

Special Abilities or Talents

Vampire abilities/talents are either a skill obtained during creation or learned later. Some abilities include: flying; reading minds; moving objects telekinetically; seeing the future; possessing super speed, super strength, and/or heightened senses; and healing quickly. Vampires go underground to heal faster. Vampires can erase people’s memories or give powerful suggestions. They speak an ancient, unknown language. Vampire blood has healing qualities for humans, tastes like strawberries, has an intoxicating side effect with a resulting hangover effect, and can be an aphrodisiac. Vampire tears are blood.

Other Relationships

Vampires live alone, with their maker, or in groups (families) called “nests.” Their interactions with humans are limited, as they tend to consider humans a lower life form, with the exception of protection. Vampires can have protection arrangements with wizards. Thralls are humans controlled by vampires, the connection can only be severed by the vampire who bit them or death.

Vampires can procreate with humans. Vampire offspring will protect their mother in the womb. They have a nine-month gestation period and look human. Vampire hunters are the human-vampire offspring who hunt to kill their vampire parent, when their parent’s memories emerge in their mind at puberty, but not all half-vampires become vampire hunters.

Supernatural beings can sense other supernatural beings.

Blood Exchange and Blood Bond

A blood exchange occurs when a vampire gives a human their blood. It allows a vampire to transmit his memories into a mortal’s mind, creates a link between vampire and mortal, and marks the mortal to other supernaturals. Humans can learn to shield against the contactless transmission of memories, but this usually results in a headache. Memories can also be transmitted by the vampire holding the other person’s head (think Vulcan mind meld). Blood bonds strengthen when more blood is shared and when the mortal gives the vampire their blood.

Codes and Law

There is a vampire “code” to keep their existence a secret. There is a vampire “law” not to harm another vampire’s human. Vampire’s mark a human as their own through a claiming ceremony. Vampire claiming is similar to human marriage. The ceremony involves a special dagger and blood exchange, and is sealed with a mating. As a result, the human will gain some vampiric abilities without becoming a vampire.

General

Vampire existence is a curse, death means Hell. The older and purer the blood, the stronger the vampire. The need for and amount of “rest” reduces with “age.” They are immortal, although there are ways they can die. For instance, prolonged exposure to the sun.

They drink human blood to survive. A human goes to a beautiful place during the bite, but vampires don’t need to drink directly from the source. They can tolerate a glass of red wine. Vampire skin is pinkish after feeding. If a vampire is too hungry, the hunger takes over. Their eyes turn yellow when their fangs drop. Fangs can extend and retract at will.

If a human really wants a vampire to leave their home, they can compel them. Anyone can enter a vampire’s home if the deed is held by an undead being (vampire).

Wards are used for protection. Wizards can cast protection spells to make a property virtually invisible from the road or air. Anyone who approaches the property will simply change their course and not realize it. The address doesn't exist, either. There is an actual address on the deed, but not one that can be found by GPS.

Spotlight on love for #TirgearrTuesday

I write romance novels so some of my most poignant scenes are about love. Not bedroom scenes... I'm talking about the great declarations of love. This week, I'm sharing excerpts from The Magicals series... There's something special in witnessing the moment your characters, or at least one of them, realize that they're in love.

Now, to set the stage... Corgan confesses he has put Marisa in danger from a vampire set on revenge and admits that he can't live without her...

“What were you planning to do? Just sit here like a duck waiting to be destroyed?”

“I didn't care. I was ready to die.”

“Well? Do you care now?” she demanded.

“I will protect you with my life. Claim or not.”

“That's not really answering my question, Corgan. You do that a lot, you know?”

“I care now. I plan to be around as long as you are.” He kissed her hand.

She smiled at him as he looked up at her from under his hooded eyelids. A warm feeling moved through her. It spread over her like a warm blanket. It felt like love? Not a feeling she was exactly familiar with, despite the fact she wrote romance novels for a living. The whole relationship thing never really worked for her. She just figured she wasn't cut out for it. When she wrote about love and relationships, it wasn't from experience, more like super-charged imagination. So, this is what it felt like? Warm and comfortable.

Corgan licked her wrist and grazed her skin with his teeth.

Okay, scratch comfortable, it was more like electric and terrifying. Was she ready to take the plunge? Hell, it didn't matter if she was ready. She moved around restlessly as Corgan made a trail of wet kisses up her arm and around her shoulder.

“Yes?” he asked.

“Yes.” Her voice sounded breathless.

He bit into the flesh just below her shoulder. A series of feelings passed through her—joy, bliss.

Now, to set the stage... Kurtis is looking forward to teasing his old friend Corgan about his new girlfriend, but secretly desires Dresandra, Corgan's maker although he tries to fight his feelings...

Kurtis nodded again. His old friend was besotted with the petite wisp of a woman. He never thought he’d live to see the day, but Corgan’s open adoration of Marisa proved otherwise. He looked forward to the unapologetic ribbing he’d give Corgan later.

While Corgan and Marisa said their good-byes to Waldor, he glanced surreptitiously at Dresandra. Her eyes flashed with a hint of danger, yet her face remained unaffected, a mask of indifference. The exchange of farewells continued with Dresandra remaining apart from the group. She wouldn’t be here if she didn’t care. Yet her tense body language, arms crossed against her chest, told a different story. Like a burning stone, Dresandra appeared cold and impassive on the outside, while a great passion burned within her. Will I get burned? With a private laugh, quickly disguised as a cough, he turned his gaze away from the puzzling female. The “love bug” must be contagious. Not a disease he wanted to catch. Not when his entire life was in a state of internal upheaval.

Spotlight on The Magicals for #TirgearrTuesday

Who are The Magicals?

When I wrote A Vampire's Tale, I hadn't planned on writing a book series. My secondary character Kurtis Warde (see spotlight from last week) just needed his own story. Then a character I introduced in A Wizard's Choice, fairy Alina Lehrer, needed her own story. A book series was born. And I had, inadvertently, created my own magical world.

A Vampire's Tale introduced my vampires, Corgan and Dee, and a group of wizards called The Circle. Fairies and The Anunnaki, the origin species of fairies and wizards, were introduced in A Wizard's Choice. And A Fairy's Quest, coming soon, delves a little deeper into the fairies.

My characters live in a world of magical realism where everything is "normal" just with magical beings like vampires, wizards, and fairies. Vampires are a type of created magical as they are created by other vampires rather than born. Fairies and wizards are descendants of The Anunnaki, initially thought to be a spacefaring advanced civilization. We later discover they were fallen angels sent to Earth as a punishment. They were stripped of their immortality, but retained some magical abilities.

I'm currently working on The Magicals origin stories. So, stay tuned for more magic. And, in the meantime, you can get up close and personal with The Magicals Series.

Featuring characters from Leading the Pack

Welcome back to 'My Character's Favorite Quote.' This week's guests are featured from Leading the Pack by David J. O'Brien.

Say the word, Boss,” Justin said, almost panting. “I’ll rip his throat out.”

Patrick smiled. Justin showed exactly how much he wanted to spill blood by calling Patrick Boss.

“No, Justin. You will say the word.” The word would be the last this man heard.

The word was werewolf.

In the Silver Nights Trilogy, a pack of werewolves live among us, hidden in plain sight. Their identity must remain a secret – unless exceptional circumstances occur.

Once the secret is revealed, the word Werewolf spoken aloud, death is usually imminent.

In the second book of the trilogy, Leading the Pack, new Alpha Patrick must control his pack and ensure they keep the word werewolf unsaid, but it’s not always possible.

Leading the Pack, Silver Nights Trilogy, Book Two by David J. O'Brien

Alphas aren't elected; they're self-selected.

Life has been good since Paul McHew left his werewolf pack twenty years ago and married Susan. Patrick is the eldest of their four children and feels the pull of the full moon earlier than his father had.

Patrick itches for the city, but things have changed since his father's time. The economy is booming and everyone has a smart phone. But in a post 9-11 world, where security cameras abound, everyone is being watched.

Patrick must make the city streets his own as the eldest of a new generation. To do that, he must learn to control his own impulses, and those of his pack mates, if he hopes to become their leader.

Encountering a potential mate and facing a definite rival, can Patrick be the alpha everyone expects him to be?

Excerpt from Unleashing the Pack:

Patrick McHew strolled along a quiet street at sunset. A spring shower had cleared the air and left small puddles on the uneven pavement. Strings of horse chestnut petals lay along the gutters. The old trees standing up out of the concrete and asphalt shed no perfume into the coming night, but Patrick yet smelled the fallen flowers among the other scents emanating from the street.

He passed a kid of ten or twelve cycling around in circles on a BMX. A block away a young man in his twenties lingered on a corner. He watched Patrick approach, then turned away. An unspoken agreement had been reached. Patrick strolled past as if the man was as much a part of the street furniture as a lamppost or traffic sign.

Further on, a small group of teenagers leaned against the railings of a small park. Two of them pushed themselves from the railings and stood in the middle of the sidewalk. The other three stayed where they were, but stared fixedly at Patrick as he neared. Patrick instantly saw they were different. They dressed in the same kind of clothes—pants hanging down just as far—but these teens were from the suburbs. While the drug dealers and local street kids let Patrick and his friends pass through their territory the same way they let the trains and buses pass, these kids wanted to interact negatively.

Released to the city on the pretence of going to the cinema or some such legitimate pursuit, he surmised, their parents never discovered they found violence more diverting than the movies. These thugs always picked on weaker people and those in smaller groups, so they never went home with bruises.

Tonight they would.

The farthest one shifted his stance and took out his cell phone. Still leaning against the railings, he started to film the proceedings. Another annoying trend among the youth; posting their exploits on the Internet, even when those exploits were beating up other kids or stealing hats from strangers.

"What's goin' on?" one of the two blocking his way asked.

Patrick kept walking. He was now ten feet away and quickened his pace.

"You walkin' on my street?"

"You got to pay the toll," the other added.

Patrick shook his head, wondering where they'd got that line. It sounded like a bad eighties movie. The nearest two thugs let him pass without speaking; they wanted to surround him.

"You talkin' to me?" Patrick asked the nearest teen, imitating DeNiro. Before waiting for a reply, he lashed out. The heel of his palm slammed sideways against the teen's nose, shattering it in a spray of blood. The thug doubled over, holding his gushing face and cursing.

Patrick kept walking, lengthening his stride.

The others stared at their injured companion for a second, too shocked to react. The thug with the phone spun on his heel to follow Patrick as he passed by, his mouth agape.

When Patrick was already five yards away, they began to run after him.

"You'll fuckin' pay for that," one shouted.

Patrick began to jog, then broke into a run.

As he skirted around the block, he yipped loudly. The pursuing teens took this as a cry of fear. They started yelling, breaking into sprints after him.

Patrick looked behind and laughed. He ran fifty yards down the next street and then cut into an alleyway, the gang of youths at his heels.

As he passed by a dumpster, Patrick saw two men standing behind it. He pulled up short. Above him, on a fire escape, another five men stood.

One of these dropped to the ground behind Patrick.

Patrick turned around. The figures at the dumpster stepped out of the shadows. They smiled at Patrick.

He grinned back. "Say hello to my new friends."

The teens thundered into the alley and came to a halt when they saw Patrick had stopped.

When they saw the men step out from behind the dumpster they spread out, ready for a fight.

Then the other four figures dropped from the fire escape, landed light as cats on the asphalt.

It was five against eight, now.

The youths looked at one another and in unspoken agreement began to back out of the alley. Behind them, however, two more shadows materialised into the shapes of men, and slowly approached.

Patrick glanced right and left at the men now standing beside him; his own gang, his pack.

Featuring Lacey Devaine from Lacey Goes to Tokyo

Welcome back to 'My Character's Favorite Quote.' This week's guest is Lacey Devaine from Lacey Goes to Tokyo by C.H. Lyn.

"I drop my hand to my side. I meet my own gaze, staring back at me in the glass. I am proud of this body. The strength on the outside that matches my inner strength. I flex my arms, watching the muscles ripple. I tense my core, and the little pudge under my bellybutton hardens like steel. I turn to the side, and the faint outline of stretch marks on my hips catches the light.

I smile. At myself. At my transformation. At my success."

This isn't something the character says out loud, it's her narration during the scene. Lacey goes through the unimaginable in her youth. This section, and this paragraph specifically, illustrates how different she is now. She is not the girl who was abused, she is a strong, powerful woman, more than capable of taking down her enemies.

Lacey Goes to Tokyo by C.H. Lyn

International travel means international danger.

Lacey Devaine is a four-year veteran of a spy ring which fronts as an exclusive escort service, Miss Belle's Travel Guides. Maintaining her cover is Lacey's number one priority to protect the integrity of the operation she works for.

While on assignment in Tokyo, a nosy newspaper reporter threatens to blow the lid off a scandal that will put dozens of innocent lives at risk. To protect her cover, Miss Belle is called in to act on intelligence Lacey has uncovered.

Can these beautiful, intelligent, and deadly women complete this assignment in time and emerge unscathed? Or will this mission be their last?

Book Spotlight - New Release - Fall by A.K. Morgen

Songs of Destruction:  FALL's Playlist by A.K. Morgen

Music is such a big source of inspiration for me. I wrote FALL (The Ragnarök Prophesies: Book Two) over the course of a year way back in 2012-2013. When prepping it to republish this year, I considered coming up with a whole new playlist as I worked my way through edits. But I quickly found that the original playlist I created way back then was already exactly what I needed for this story.

In FALL, we see this struggle unfolding between Arionna Jacobs and Dace Matthews (our apocalypse stopping heroine and hero) where they both have their own ideas on what's best for everyone. They end up clashing over those differences of opinion and reacting to this added element of angst in their relationship in some pretty intense ways at times. As a result, this created a sort of dark, melancholy tone for FALL in places.

I'm not exactly a dark and melancholy kind of person, so it was critical that I found music that captured that feeling while writing or it simply wouldn't have worked. Luckily, there was an endless supply of music out there that really captures the more angsty parts of FALL, so I had a lot of good choices.

Revisiting them again while editing was, surprisingly, a lot of fun. I hadn't heard some of these in a few years, so it was really nice to queue them up and remember why it fit so well.

Here are some of my favorite angst-ridden songs from FALL's playlists.

  • Letters From The Sky - The Civil Wars - This song so perfectly captures Ari and Dace's relationship, and the whole hopeful yet melancholy apocalypse theme of the series, I added it to the list the first time I heard it.
  • Closer - Burn Season - This song reminds me so much of Dace at times. He's so screwed up, and yet so amazingly good at the same time, I always feel a little sad for him.
  • Maybe Tomorrow – Stereophonics – I can't think of any other song that says so much with so little. It's sad, it's hopeful, and just all around powerful.
  • All Falls Down – Adelita's Way - This song was an early favorite. I love it for Ronan, who we see a lot more of in FALL, and really start getting to know. It also perfectly captures some of the darkest points of the entire Ragnarök series.
  • Radioactive - Imagination Dragons – This song has such a great feel to it. There's that apocalyptic vibe, and then that self-loathing vibe, and then underneath all of that is the story of an awakening or desire to change. We see a little of each in FALL.
  • Always – Saliva – This is one of my all-time favorite pissed off songs. It's so spot on when it comes to that "breaking point" of relationship angst. I rocked it a time or five.
  • One More Night - Maroon 5 – This is another great dysfunctional relationship song. Plus, I don't know anyone who can make dysfunction sound as hot as Adam Levine does.
  • Hold it Against Me – Sam Tsui – Speaking of hot, I love, love, love Sam Tsui's cover of this song. It's so raw and lovely at the same time. There's a specific scene in FALL where this song fit perfectly.
  • Tears of an Angel – Ryandan – If I had to pick a single song to listen to while writing the entire Ragnarök Prophesies series, this song would be it. It's haunting, beautiful, sad, hopeful, and just all around amazing.

About FALL (The Ragnarök Prophesies: Book Two):

How do you save someone who doesn't want to be saved?

Those called to stand guard against the end are broken, and Sköll and Hati run free. Now Arionna Jacobs and Dace Matthews face a threat unlike any before. Ragnarök is coming and they aren't strong enough to stop it.

Arionna thought she understood sacrifice, but she never counted on her destiny tearing Dace apart. Ever since she nearly died, he has been consumed with guilt. Now it threatens to turn him into the monster he always feared.

It's up to Arionna to stop him before it's too late, but the path to hell is paved with good intentions, and Dace is hurtling toward self-destruction. This time, Arionna isn't sure she can save him from himself.

Can she convince him to let the past go, or is her true destiny to sacrifice her heart in exchange for the lives of the people she loves?
