#TirgearrTuesday

I haven't felt much like a romance author this year. I published Designed by Destiny in November of 2022—hence the big birthday celebration this week—but for most of 2023, I've been MIA. Well, not exactly missing... but definitely out of the action. For 17 days in January, February, March, and May, I attended my Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) Hearing.

January 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 31
February 1, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21
March 28
May 19

After eight years, I finally got my hearing. And it was tough. The toughest thing I've ever experienced, and I had two babies without drugs. << lol >> Even when the hearing was over, and it's been almost 6 months now, I couldn't write. I had this horrible stomach issue (which started during the hearing) which was later diagnosed in August as ulcerative colitis. I was really sick. I had to lie down almost all the time. I couldn't eat and lost a ton of weight—not the way I'd recommend going.

Then, I decided to get serious about my non-fiction—the memoir I'm writing about my ten-year ordeal, including the hearing. It's in progress, currently at about 80k. Working on my non-fiction is therapeutic in processing the trauma that was the hearing and the re-traumatization from participating in the hearing, but working on the non-fiction means I'm not writing romance. My hope was to finish at least the first draft of my non-fiction so I could get back to Fairy Godmothers, Incorporated, but the going is slower than I'd like—even writing about it is super stressful. Re-reading the transcripts is re-traumatizing. I have a lot of "that happened?!?" moments; it seems so unreal. How could this happen to me? How did something so simple end up getting so complicated? For those very reasons, I am writing my story.

In the meantime, I'll switch gears for a moment. First of all, to wish my book Designed by Destiny a Happy Book Birthday! Designed by Destiny is my 7th published book and the first in the Fairy Godmothers, Incorporated series (that I intend to be a trilogy). Secondly, Designed by Destiny is on sale, just 99c until November 17, and RABT Book Tours and PR is running a blitz and giveaway for me tomorrow.

Now, I feel a bit more like a romance author. I wrote this book (Designed by Destiny), and it's on sale. It would make my day (my week, and my year—get the reference?) if you bought a copy. Stay tuned for the Book Blitz happening tomorrow... there's a $25 Amazon Gift Card up for grabs!

Fall Back Into Books Promotion

Fall Back into Books runs from September 15 to October 1! Find some great authors offering free books in multiple genres -  General Fiction, Mystery & Suspense, and Romance!

I'm participating in this promotion with A Wizard's Choice (The Magicals Series Book 2), my paranormal romance novel starring Kurtis Warde. If you remember, Kurtis was introduced in A Vampire's Tale (The Magicals Series Book 1). He's a wizard apprentice to his grandfather, but he's torn between duty (to his family and other Magicals) and love (for Dee, a vampiress who may or may not feel the same way about him). A romance is not complete without some conflict. In A Wizard's Choice, Kurtis also must choose between two potential love interests. So many choices...

Talking about Promotion... Again...

I'm an author, a published author, so I spend most of my time...

PROMOTING MY BOOKS

Did you think I was going to say writing? I wish I spent most of my writing-allocated time actually writing. Instead, I—like every other author out there (probably)—devote hours (and I mean hours) to book promotion.

A book is a product. In order to sell a product, you must promote it. A book no one knows about will sell exactly zero copies. Promoting is the difference between <<whispering>> "I wrote a book. Want to buy it?" and proclaiming loudly through multiple channels, including paid ads, "Buy my book!"

I don't have a magic recipe for book promotion. My sales are not stellar... yet... but I've only been in the game for ten years so I'm practically a baby author. In that time, I published six books and had a major life crisis. Long, long, long story short... In 2013, I was physically assaulted at work, received no support (my employer actually tried to push me out), and developed PTSD. I started writing A Vampire's Tale, the first book of The Magicals, when I was bed-ridden with "unexplainable" low blood pressure, high cortisol, and fainting spells. But that's enough of that talk. Everyone has stuff going on. This is my stuff, and while I do talk about it sometimes, this post is supposed to be about promotion.

So, promotion... If you're a veteran author, you might want to skip over the basics...

***

The Basics

The promotion process starts long before you publish a book.

The minute you decide to write a book and have aspirations for publication, you need to think about your author platform. An author platform is your online presence—website, social media, newsletter mailing list.

A good-looking and functional website is very important. Social media platforms come and go, but a website is digital real estate you control. I run my own website through Weebly, but there are many hosts who offer the "plug and play" functions you need to build a DIY website. You don't have to be a computer programmer. I'm certainly not. If I run into problems, then I Google for solutions or outsource when the issue goes beyond my ability. Running my website is a huge cost savings, and I appreciate the ability to make timely, on-demand changes.

Social media is huge. You don't need to use all of the platforms, but you need Facebook, at least. As for other platforms, research what social media your target market uses. If you're using social media, then stay consistent with posting and engagement. I am active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and Blogger. I use social media planners, like Planoly and Buffer, to schedule posts. I have a YouTube channel, but I don't consider myself an active user. I buy Facebook and Instagram ads, and have also promoted tweets. I signed up to use Google ads, but their process is more complex and I haven't run an ad campaign yet.

Maintaining a mailing list is still an important part of your approach. Email goes directly into the hands of people who are interested in you or your work. I have a quarterly newsletter and send out notices of sales, cover reveals, and events like blog tours.

Once you have a book to sell, before it releases, you need to email your mailing list, line up book reviewers, update author profiles, post a cover reveal, add the book to your website, book a blog tour, create an inventory of social media graphics and quote cards, and post to social media. At the pre-order level, you can also book promotions and new release newsletter spots.

Recommended Book Promotion Sites:

  • BookBub (the holy grail of promotion sites) - I haven't been able to secure a spot yet, but I use BookBub ads.
  • eReader News Today
  • Bargain Booksy
  • My Romance Reads
  • The Fussy Librarian
  • Free Kindle Books & Tips
  • eBook Discovery
  • Kindle Nation Daily

Each book promotion site has its own guidelines for submission. Make sure you submit for the right genre and have the correct price set on promotion day. I track the effectiveness of each campaign in order to determine where I spend my dollars.

Eye-catching graphics on social media are a must. Like the DIY website, there are a lot of sites or apps for DIY design. I use Canva. I use both the website version and mobile app. Canva has templates for the correct dimensions for the various social media platforms, taking the guesswork out.

And the book itself is very important to the promotional process. Professional cover design and editing—whether you traditionally or self-publish—is an absolute must. Don't forget the concise blurb. They are a pain in the butt to write, but readers evaluate the cover and/or the blurb before making their purchasing decision.

***

And, then, if there is any time left in my day... I write.

Time management is a thing. I use social media planners to schedule posts, but it takes a lot of time to create graphics. I browse social media during meals or rests. But everything takes time. Scheduling promotions, keeping accounts (I track every transaction related to my writing), and contacting book reviewers. Then there's blogging (I post irregularly) and editing (if a book is in that stage).

When it comes to book promotion, I've tried a lot of different methods. There's no shortcut to success. I'm here to tell a story, and hope that it's meaningful to someone along the way. I write because I think better in words. I wrote this post because I was thinking about all the promotions I've been juggling this week. I have The Magicals Box Set in pre-order, a 99c sale for A Wizard's Choice, a blog tour starting this week for A Magical's Gift... There's a lot going on.

I'm also in the middle of writing a book. It's been difficult writing this summer. We had a three-week visit at my in-laws. I brought my laptop, but I didn't get much time to write. The kids were home for the summer so it's not likely I'd have had the time anyway. But school started this week and football is back... so, while my people are occupied, I'm going to finish my current WIP.

At the end of the day, I keep writing. Book promotion is a crucial part of the writing process since my dream, as a published author, is to sell books. And, to sell books, I need to get the word out. I don't have the answers. I might not even know the right questions. I try to stay current on the latest book promotion how-to, but one thing has remained constant. Book promotion requires consistency. Keep promoting and keep publishing because the last book sells the next book or something like that.

And, one more thing, buy my book... kidding... not kidding... :)

Featuring characters from Leading the Pack

Welcome back to 'My Character's Favorite Quote.' This week's guests are featured from Leading the Pack by David J. O'Brien.

Say the word, Boss,” Justin said, almost panting. “I’ll rip his throat out.”

Patrick smiled. Justin showed exactly how much he wanted to spill blood by calling Patrick Boss.

“No, Justin. You will say the word.” The word would be the last this man heard.

The word was werewolf.

In the Silver Nights Trilogy, a pack of werewolves live among us, hidden in plain sight. Their identity must remain a secret – unless exceptional circumstances occur.

Once the secret is revealed, the word Werewolf spoken aloud, death is usually imminent.

In the second book of the trilogy, Leading the Pack, new Alpha Patrick must control his pack and ensure they keep the word werewolf unsaid, but it’s not always possible.

Leading the Pack, Silver Nights Trilogy, Book Two by David J. O'Brien

Alphas aren't elected; they're self-selected.

Life has been good since Paul McHew left his werewolf pack twenty years ago and married Susan. Patrick is the eldest of their four children and feels the pull of the full moon earlier than his father had.

Patrick itches for the city, but things have changed since his father's time. The economy is booming and everyone has a smart phone. But in a post 9-11 world, where security cameras abound, everyone is being watched.

Patrick must make the city streets his own as the eldest of a new generation. To do that, he must learn to control his own impulses, and those of his pack mates, if he hopes to become their leader.

Encountering a potential mate and facing a definite rival, can Patrick be the alpha everyone expects him to be?

Excerpt from Unleashing the Pack:

Patrick McHew strolled along a quiet street at sunset. A spring shower had cleared the air and left small puddles on the uneven pavement. Strings of horse chestnut petals lay along the gutters. The old trees standing up out of the concrete and asphalt shed no perfume into the coming night, but Patrick yet smelled the fallen flowers among the other scents emanating from the street.

He passed a kid of ten or twelve cycling around in circles on a BMX. A block away a young man in his twenties lingered on a corner. He watched Patrick approach, then turned away. An unspoken agreement had been reached. Patrick strolled past as if the man was as much a part of the street furniture as a lamppost or traffic sign.

Further on, a small group of teenagers leaned against the railings of a small park. Two of them pushed themselves from the railings and stood in the middle of the sidewalk. The other three stayed where they were, but stared fixedly at Patrick as he neared. Patrick instantly saw they were different. They dressed in the same kind of clothes—pants hanging down just as far—but these teens were from the suburbs. While the drug dealers and local street kids let Patrick and his friends pass through their territory the same way they let the trains and buses pass, these kids wanted to interact negatively.

Released to the city on the pretence of going to the cinema or some such legitimate pursuit, he surmised, their parents never discovered they found violence more diverting than the movies. These thugs always picked on weaker people and those in smaller groups, so they never went home with bruises.

Tonight they would.

The farthest one shifted his stance and took out his cell phone. Still leaning against the railings, he started to film the proceedings. Another annoying trend among the youth; posting their exploits on the Internet, even when those exploits were beating up other kids or stealing hats from strangers.

"What's goin' on?" one of the two blocking his way asked.

Patrick kept walking. He was now ten feet away and quickened his pace.

"You walkin' on my street?"

"You got to pay the toll," the other added.

Patrick shook his head, wondering where they'd got that line. It sounded like a bad eighties movie. The nearest two thugs let him pass without speaking; they wanted to surround him.

"You talkin' to me?" Patrick asked the nearest teen, imitating DeNiro. Before waiting for a reply, he lashed out. The heel of his palm slammed sideways against the teen's nose, shattering it in a spray of blood. The thug doubled over, holding his gushing face and cursing.

Patrick kept walking, lengthening his stride.

The others stared at their injured companion for a second, too shocked to react. The thug with the phone spun on his heel to follow Patrick as he passed by, his mouth agape.

When Patrick was already five yards away, they began to run after him.

"You'll fuckin' pay for that," one shouted.

Patrick began to jog, then broke into a run.

As he skirted around the block, he yipped loudly. The pursuing teens took this as a cry of fear. They started yelling, breaking into sprints after him.

Patrick looked behind and laughed. He ran fifty yards down the next street and then cut into an alleyway, the gang of youths at his heels.

As he passed by a dumpster, Patrick saw two men standing behind it. He pulled up short. Above him, on a fire escape, another five men stood.

One of these dropped to the ground behind Patrick.

Patrick turned around. The figures at the dumpster stepped out of the shadows. They smiled at Patrick.

He grinned back. "Say hello to my new friends."

The teens thundered into the alley and came to a halt when they saw Patrick had stopped.

When they saw the men step out from behind the dumpster they spread out, ready for a fight.

Then the other four figures dropped from the fire escape, landed light as cats on the asphalt.

It was five against eight, now.

The youths looked at one another and in unspoken agreement began to back out of the alley. Behind them, however, two more shadows materialised into the shapes of men, and slowly approached.

Patrick glanced right and left at the men now standing beside him; his own gang, his pack.

Featuring Skylar Landis from One Night in Minneapolis

Welcome back to 'My Character's Favorite Quote.' This week's guest is Skylar Landis of One Night in Minneapolis by Margie Church.

The familiar voice from behind Skylar rekindled her anger. Marcie. You do wear the balls in your family. Eight months pregnant and still fighting your lame husband’s battles for him. What a woman.

She faced Marcie. “Of course they are concerned for me. No matter my age or rank, I’m still their child. However, they respect my choice even when they can’t know much about where I am or what I’m doing. They’re a proud Marine family that supports their soldier.”

One Night in Minneapolis by Margie Church

Marine Major Skylar Landis doesn’t resemble the demure Catholic high school girl Vince Andersen once knew. They’d dated briefly until she'd patched things up with his nemesis, Ethan Standfeld. After school, she joined the Marines and they’d lost touch.

Their ten year class reunion in Minneapolis brings Skylar face-to-face with Vince, awakening her memories of the past. She asks him to plan a hot, no-strings attached hook-up to sustain her sexual fantasies while her intelligence unit is deployed to the Middle East. As their adventure unfolds, and he gives her exactly what she needs, Skylar wonders whether she can forget the man who put her desires first and asked for nothing in return.

Featuring Solveij from The Cold Hearth

Welcome back to 'My Character's Favorite Quote.' This week's guest is Solveij of The Cold Hearth (#3 in The Atheling Chronicles) by Garth Pettersen.

"Remaining quiet is but a way to avoid harm, and in silence you learn to see what others miss."

This statement is made by Solveij, a Danish serving woman in the hall of Harald, in response to a young man saying he found her surprisingly wise for one who usually keeps to herself. Solveij attracts the attention of more than one man at Harald and Selia's hide (the amount of land that supports one family in eleventh century England).

Harald is the young second son of  Cnute, king of England, Denmark, and parts of Norway. With his Frisian wife, Selia, Harald hopes to build a life at a distance from the intrigues of court. Unfortunately, he is not the only atheling (throne-worthy), and all of the others are more ambitious than Harald, and more murderous.

Solveij is a supporting character in Harald's story, but like him, her strength is quiet and thoughtful, and not to be underestimated.

The Cold Hearth by Garth
Pettersen

"The sons of Cnute are dead men." The dying words of his brother's assailant travel across the North Sea to the English Midlands.

Harald, the king's second son, receives the warning while rebuilding a hall where he hopes to farm and lead a peaceful life with Selia, his Frisian wife. But as the hall nears completion, they learn the family who lived there before them all perished in a single night of bloodshed. Could the grounds be cursed?

Now the threat of unknown enemies casts a long shadow. Should they distrust the brooding Saxon neighbor or the two weapon-bearers they hired for protection? Should they suspect either of the two women they have taken on with the other hirelings? Only their Jewish warrior friend, Ravya ben Naaman, seems to be the only one above suspicion.

Book Spotlight - New Release - Fall by A.K. Morgen

Songs of Destruction:  FALL's Playlist by A.K. Morgen

Music is such a big source of inspiration for me. I wrote FALL (The Ragnarök Prophesies: Book Two) over the course of a year way back in 2012-2013. When prepping it to republish this year, I considered coming up with a whole new playlist as I worked my way through edits. But I quickly found that the original playlist I created way back then was already exactly what I needed for this story.

In FALL, we see this struggle unfolding between Arionna Jacobs and Dace Matthews (our apocalypse stopping heroine and hero) where they both have their own ideas on what's best for everyone. They end up clashing over those differences of opinion and reacting to this added element of angst in their relationship in some pretty intense ways at times. As a result, this created a sort of dark, melancholy tone for FALL in places.

I'm not exactly a dark and melancholy kind of person, so it was critical that I found music that captured that feeling while writing or it simply wouldn't have worked. Luckily, there was an endless supply of music out there that really captures the more angsty parts of FALL, so I had a lot of good choices.

Revisiting them again while editing was, surprisingly, a lot of fun. I hadn't heard some of these in a few years, so it was really nice to queue them up and remember why it fit so well.

Here are some of my favorite angst-ridden songs from FALL's playlists.

  • Letters From The Sky - The Civil Wars - This song so perfectly captures Ari and Dace's relationship, and the whole hopeful yet melancholy apocalypse theme of the series, I added it to the list the first time I heard it.
  • Closer - Burn Season - This song reminds me so much of Dace at times. He's so screwed up, and yet so amazingly good at the same time, I always feel a little sad for him.
  • Maybe Tomorrow – Stereophonics – I can't think of any other song that says so much with so little. It's sad, it's hopeful, and just all around powerful.
  • All Falls Down – Adelita's Way - This song was an early favorite. I love it for Ronan, who we see a lot more of in FALL, and really start getting to know. It also perfectly captures some of the darkest points of the entire Ragnarök series.
  • Radioactive - Imagination Dragons – This song has such a great feel to it. There's that apocalyptic vibe, and then that self-loathing vibe, and then underneath all of that is the story of an awakening or desire to change. We see a little of each in FALL.
  • Always – Saliva – This is one of my all-time favorite pissed off songs. It's so spot on when it comes to that "breaking point" of relationship angst. I rocked it a time or five.
  • One More Night - Maroon 5 – This is another great dysfunctional relationship song. Plus, I don't know anyone who can make dysfunction sound as hot as Adam Levine does.
  • Hold it Against Me – Sam Tsui – Speaking of hot, I love, love, love Sam Tsui's cover of this song. It's so raw and lovely at the same time. There's a specific scene in FALL where this song fit perfectly.
  • Tears of an Angel – Ryandan – If I had to pick a single song to listen to while writing the entire Ragnarök Prophesies series, this song would be it. It's haunting, beautiful, sad, hopeful, and just all around amazing.

About FALL (The Ragnarök Prophesies: Book Two):

How do you save someone who doesn't want to be saved?

Those called to stand guard against the end are broken, and Sköll and Hati run free. Now Arionna Jacobs and Dace Matthews face a threat unlike any before. Ragnarök is coming and they aren't strong enough to stop it.

Arionna thought she understood sacrifice, but she never counted on her destiny tearing Dace apart. Ever since she nearly died, he has been consumed with guilt. Now it threatens to turn him into the monster he always feared.

It's up to Arionna to stop him before it's too late, but the path to hell is paved with good intentions, and Dace is hurtling toward self-destruction. This time, Arionna isn't sure she can save him from himself.

Can she convince him to let the past go, or is her true destiny to sacrifice her heart in exchange for the lives of the people she loves?
