I purposely kept details about 'The Guardians' a little vague and open to interpretation. In Dream Hunter, Gabe only has contact with his 'employer', a woman of strong, unworldly power. Beyond knowing Gabe's job responsibilities, not a lot of information was provided about 'The Guardians' themselves. How is the association organized? How many guardians exist here on Earth? What is their mandate?
When I wrote Dream Hunter, I focused on the mysterious danger and the budding romance between Cynthia and Gabe. I decided later to write a prequel to address these unanswered questions and more. Here's an excerpt from my work in progress featuring my character Adem, the leader of The Senarai.
A tall figure stood in the shadows. “They believe the story is simply a story.”
“Good,” Adem said.
“I could not discover anything about the author.”
“That is unfortunate.”
“I am not finished looking.”
“Then by all means, continue your search.” Adem dismissed him with a wave of his hand.
The man stepped into the center of the cave. His blue eyes stared blankly into the distance, his mind cluttered with his thoughts. One thought was pretty evident. If I do not find the author, Adem will not be pleased.
Adem was wise, in a way only one who is truly ancient can be. He made his decisions fairly with precision and care. For the most part, his people loved him. As a super intelligent race, The Senarai were drawn to peaceful order. Only once during his rule had chaos arisen. That had been over 65 million years ago when Eudes and Vital had battled for the leadership. The day life on Earth had been destroyed. It could have been yesterday, the memory was so etched in his mind. His people, in particular those who had caused the disaster, must atone.
Yes, The Senarai were ancient. In addition to their immortality, they also possessed great powers. They had the capacity to accomplish anything. They were scholars, explorers, guardians, but never destroyers. He still grieved the life lost that day. When Eudes’ fireball hit the planet, in the land now known as the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, Adem had made a promise to himself to do everything in his power to make amends. He sent Eudes and Vital to the surface, to live in darkness, among the dying animals and volcanic eruptions which lasted many months. He tasked them to protect the planet because he had failed to prevent the disaster.
The Senarai were destined to protect the universe. Adem would ensure it.
Adem looked up and acknowledged the presence of his assistant. “Yes, Tari?”
With a quick bow, Tari said, “We need to recruit more Guardians.”
“How can this be?” Adem shook his head sadly. “We just sent more.”
“It’s ghastly, what’s going on at the surface. War, famine, senseless crime... The humans are killing each other and destroying the planet in the process!”
“And what are we doing to stop this?”
My story about 'The Guardians' is still underway. In the meantime, you can get to know Cynthia and Gabe in Dream Hunter.
Cynthia’s dreams are so real, they are actually coming true – complete with the prerequisite dream guy. But things are not as they seem.
Who said dreams are sweet?
Chicago businesswoman Cynthia Courtland is completely focused on her career when a sensual, reoccurring dream disrupts her orderly life. Then a threat against her workplace forces her to take time off. She is lost with nowhere to go--only her empty apartment.
Work is Gabe’s life too; he takes it very seriously and will do whatever it takes to succeed. He's been watching over Cynthia for a long time and he has her best interests at heart, but can he protect her from the danger she is blind to? When Cynthia insists on investigating the threat so she can get back to work, it makes Gabe's job all the more difficult.
When things settle, will there be more for them than a life filled with work? Will she give her dreams a chance to come true?
